2008 Election Analysis

In a Radio Address, November 3, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge stated: “I therefore urge upon all the voters of our country, without reference to party, that they assemble…at their respective voting places in the exercise of the high office of American citizenship, that they approach the ballot box in the spirit that they would approach a sacrament, and there, disregarding all appeals to passion and prejudice, dedicate themselves truly and wholly to the welfare of their country…When an election is so held, it…sustains the belief that the voice of the people is the voice of God.”

Is this what happened in this election? Did God speak through His people?

In 2 Kings 11:17 Jehoiada the priest, made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also between the king and the people.

The first words of our Constitution are “We the people”.

On October 11, 1798, in an address to the military, President John Adams stated, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

Was the voice of the people the voice of the Lord in this election?

How many Christians actually voted? According to statists half the Christians in America aren't even registered to vote, and of those who are, only half go to the polls. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as many as 25-35% of the voting age population is not even registered to vote. That translates to between 45 and 65 million Americans!

Census Bureau statistics also show that only 53% of Americans who were eligible to vote did so in 2000, and only 39.3% voted in 2002. It is safe to say that less than half of all professing Christians vote in a given election.

Here's more sobering news: Many believers fail to consider their biblical values when voting, often choosing candidates whose values are different than their own values, convictions, and beliefs. A recent study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life shows that nearly two-thirds of Americans say their faith has little to do with their voting decisions.
Imagine the impact believers could have on our government, its leadership, and our nation if we all registered to vote and voted our values!

Was the voice of the people the voice of the Lord in this election.

I think the people were just mumbling, but the Lord is speaking loud and clear. “Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.”

President James A. Garfield challenges us to be faithful in our political stewardship with this statement.

“The people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities… If the next centennial does not find us a great nation…it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”

Christian inactivity or misguided activity in the political arena guarantees we will have unrighteous government. In every race where a committed Christian lost in this election, the margin of defeat was a few thousand and in some cases a few hundred votes.

Instead of ten thousand reasons why it can’t be done, we must be proclaiming the one reason why we can. It’s God’s command! “Choose from among you able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness, and place them to be rulers …over you”. I suspect God will help us fulfill that command if we are diligent to do it.

The eyes of the Lord run to and fro through the whole earth, to show Himself strong on their behalf of those whose hearts are loyal to Him. (2 Chronicles 16:9)

Was the voice of the people the voice of the Lord in this election?

Let’s make sure it is in the next one.  We can’t change yesterday but we can change tomorrow by what we do today. We have a short period of time to prepare for the next election.

Christians for America is committed to the support of righteous government in our land. We are calling for Christians across our land to join with us in the reestablishment of Christian principle as the core of our political system. In preparation for the 2008 elections we are developing a data base of volunteers to aid in the election of righteous candidates to public office.
